The Movie New Year Baby is a documentary directed by Socheata that delves into the Poeuv family’s past of fleeing from Cambodia during the reign of the Communist, Khmer Rogue and how it has affected their family, despite living in America. I would like to focus on Kear Poeuv who is Socheata’s mother. Poeuv created an artificially, normal life while coercing her family to live a lie. Kear reflects the opposite of the Chinese Existential principle as the mother does not confront conflicts that have arisen in life and deal with them directly. Kear’s response to her conflicts that have arisen can relate to Skinner’s personality theories of how past traumas can affect future behaviors .I feel that the mother, Kear Poeuv is an interesting†¦show more content†¦There is only one scene in New Year Baby where the couple shows physical affection and the rest of the movie they spend mocking each other and towards the end of the movie Kear does not make an appearance. It is also unusual that the mother bound everyone else in the household to withhold their family history from Socheata for 25 years. Even when Kear finally revealed the basics of their family history it was not possible to extract more information out of her. All of these actions pertain to the Chinese existential idea of escape and not facing life head-on. Kear’s behavior can be used as an example of Skinner’s principle operant response theory. The operant response theory is that a person’s behavior is reinforced by the behavior. Surviving the Cambodian labor camps and making a new life in America reinforced the behaviors that allowed her to escape. To survive the labor camps she needed to blend in with the crowd. Kear used evasive maneuvers to attain the desired outcome of escaping the camp which reinforced the inability to confront conflicts. Through silence and blending in, she avoided punishment. Even in America, she continued to blend in and keep silent. In the Chinese existential perspective, a persons behavior reflects their ability to confront suffering and death. Kear has suffered because her sister, brother-in-law, husband and a disproportionate number of other relatives died because of the genocide and conditions in labor camps.
